Frequently asked Questions
What is the Harbour Inlet Association (HIA)?
The Harbour Inlet Association (HIA) is a nonprofit neighborhood organization serving the residents of Harbour Inlet. It is a diverse and closely tied organization with a strong and vibrant sense of community. The HIA was founded in 1960 and has remained an active and hardworking volunteer organization.
What is the primary purpose of the HIA?
The primary purpose of the HIA is to create a strong sense of community among its residents through events such as Chili Cook-off, Holiday party in December, Halloween and Easter egg parties for children. In election years the HIA also organizes mayoral and commissioner candidate(s) debates to allow residents to ask questions.
The HIA also maintains the landscaping and the gatehouse at the main entrance to Harbour Inlet. Also, it increases the security of the neighborhood through the gate arms.
Besides, the HIA represents the neighborhood at City Hall and Broward County meetings and influences decisions made by the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County that can impact the Harbour Inlet neighborhood.
What is the organization structure of the HIA?
The Association is governed by a Board of Directors with the president of the HIA as its leader. The officers include the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. In addition, a number of committees such as Communications, Social Events, Landscaping, and HOA Development develop and carry out the actual work that the committees have been assigned by the Board. Besides to Board members who volunteer to serve on these committees, any HIA member can also volunteer to be on one or more committees.
How is the Board of Directors elected?
The Board is elected by the members of the HIA at the annual meeting where the current president of the HIA presents a slate of Board of Directors to all the members present. The slate of Board members is developed by the nominating committee.
Can I nominate myself to be a Board member?
You cannot nominate yourself to be considered for membership on the Board. However, you can ask any current member who is present at the Annual meeting to make your nomination from the floor.
Can I volunteer to be a member on one of the committees?
You can volunteer anytime to be on one or more committees. We are always looking for volunteers.
How do I become a member of the HIA?
You can become a member of the HIA for the calendar year by simply writing a check in the amount of the membership dues to Harbour Inlet Association and mailing it to Harbour Inlet Association, Post Office Box 460549, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33346. The membership dues are $75.
The HIA sends out prefilled membership letters and application forms to all the residents of Harbour Inlet starting in late November, for the following year.
What are the key benefits of membership?
Members are invited to socialize with neighbors at member events such as the Chili Cook-Off and Holiday party in December. Members are also invited to special children’s events such as Halloween and Easter egg hunt.
Members also receive the special Harbour Inlet Directory listing all the residents by street as well as last name, a street map of Harbour Inlet and much more.
Equally importantly, through the membership dues, members help to pay for the cost of keeping the entrance to Harbour Inlet (the Gate House) very inviting and welcoming, keep the neighborhood safe with the perceived “limited access” to the neighborhood via the gatehouse and the gate arms. See below where all your dues go to help us develop and sustain a closely tied neighborhood with a strong and vibrant sense of community.
How are the membership dues spent by the HIA?
The membership dues pay for the landscaping and its upkeep around the gate house; the maintenance of the gate house roof, including the gate arms and its structure, painting and general cleanliness; any unexpected repairs such as the Dolphins statue in the roundabout when it was damaged; social events (Holiday party, Halloween, Chili Cook-Off, Easter egg hunt…); HIA dues to the City, dues to St Sebastian Church which allows us to hold our meetings and events at its facilities; website development and updates; publication of the Harbour Inlet residents directory, post office box fees; paper and postage; and much more.
How often does the HIA hold meetings for its members?
The HIA holds Board meetings every second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the St Sebastian Church Hall except in August and December. Members are welcome to attend the Board meetings. There is an annual meeting of the entire membership in November when the new Board is elected.
What are the community events that are organized by the HIA?
The HIA organizes a number of community events during the course of the year and these include and not limited to an annual Chili Cook-off, Holiday party, Halloween party, Easter egg hunt, and a yard sale.
During an election year the HIA invites candidates running for mayor or district commissioner to a Harbour Inlet meeting where residents have the opportunity to hear the candidates’ views and ask them questions before and after the election.
The HIA also invites special speakers such as the Tavistock Group (developing the Pier 66 property on both the north and south side) to present their plans and allow the community to ask questions.
Does the HIA Board participate in City Hall and Broward County meetings to represent Harbour Inlet on projects that could have a major impact on its residents?
A number of HIA Board members actively participate in meetings and forcefully present the Harbour Inlet’s points of view to preserve and sustain the quality of life at Harbour Inlet. Some of these meetings last until 2:00 AM or later, and our Board members stay on for the good fight!
How does the HIA welcome new neighbors who have recently moved into the neighborhood?
On a regular basis the HIA scans the Broward County Property Appraisals database for newcomers to the neighborhood. Once it is established on this government database that someone has acquired a property in Harbour Inlet, a welcome letter is sent to the new resident welcoming them to the neighborhood and communicating all the upcoming events and happenings in the neighborhood.
How does the HIA communicate with members?
The HIA maintains a database of email addresses and communicates to current members through this email database. If you have not provided your email to the HIA, please send your email address to harbourinlethoa@gmail.com.
The email addresses are not shared with any other entity or person. The HIA uses the email to communicate about events and emergencies with Harbour Inlet residents only. Furthermore, the emails are not shared with any residents of Harbour Inlet.
Do Harbour Inlet residents have access to a private beach for residents only?
Some realtors have been known to say to prospective buyers of Harbour Inlet properties that residents have access to a private beach for Harbour Inlet residents only. Unfortunately this is not true. Residents do not have access to a private beach. However, residents can access a secluded and pristine public beach that is only a 3 to 10 minute walk depending upon where you live in Harbour Inlet.
